The Wakeham Family

Much loved by many of us.

Mum Rose with a wonderful sense of humour, Bill the quiet one in a house full off women.

June, the eldest who had beautiful long hair often worn in a plait.

Joan, younger than me but one of my closest friends and so much taller than me. I was so jealous.

Cindy, I did not know so well or the baby Lesley but all very pretty girls.

Here are some photos sent to me by Joan

Yes, we really did have tin baths ………… for the garden! In front with Joan is her cousin Elaine

and a little Wakeham in the middle I assume. Always remember the lovely roses in their garden.

Guess the pantomime? June with the pigtails, can you recognise anyone else?

EPSON MFP image

Joan is recognisable, she is the tallest and the little one first left was called Cousens I think. Help me out with these please.

Do you remember Tony White and his wife who owned the shop at the top of the hill, on the main road. Aptly called WHITES I think.

I was asked to do the Christmas Draw one year but after pulling out several tickets with the name “Boyce” on them, I was relieved of my duties.

Here is a photo of the Dads at an STC do. See below for a closer look.

I RECOGNISE LOADS OF FACES BUT CAN ONLY REMEMBER A FEW NAMES.

Email from Doreen Powell

Hi

I just wanted to say thank you for the Summervale reunion. My mum and I had a great day. It was lovely to see so many old friends there, and how great to talk about all the old times.

Heres to the next one!!!

I was sorry my brother Alan was unable to come though.

I have just enjoyed looking on the Blog and seeing some of the old photos.I couldn't see many of the Powell family so I have attached some old photos of mum, dad, Alan and myself.

Many thanks.

Kind Regards

Doreen ( Powell - no. 36 )

Doreen tells me they moved into Summervale in 1949 and that Alan is the same age as me but I don’t remember him. Strange that.

Anyway, Doreen has started the ball rolling – who is next?

Thanks Doreen for helping to keep the blog alive

New Photos

The first from Wenda Richards, a COLOURED photo no less! Think that’s a first on here from our childhood.

Back row: Valerie Jolly. Wenda and Angela Humphries

Front row: Margaret Driver,Philip Richards and Carol.

The second is from Graham Whiting of himself, dressed as a blackbird and his sister Carol dressed as a shepherdess. I remember being dressed like that and the crook being covered in crepe paper.

Memories.

Hello all Summervalians

Well what a marvellous, memorable day it turned out to be!  I shall treasure it always. Nearly 80 of us present, a lovely atmosphere, lots of squeals of delight and amazement, and plenty of reminiscing!I don't think we could have beaten it for quality.  So well done everyone!
My heartfelt thanks to you all for making the effort to come and support this special day.
Since arriving home in Suffolk I have had 12 e-mails and 5 phone calls from you, all praising the day and telling me how much you enjoyed it.  It was very heartwarming  and encouraging to read and hear your comments, so thank you all.
I was very sad, and I know you were too, that Jean was unable to be with us on the great day.  She had put a lot of time and effort into promoting the reunion and was looking forward to it immensely.  Then not to be able to come must have been heartbreaking for her.  Thanks anyway, Jean, for tremendous efforts on our behalf.  Perhaps you will be able to make the next one, whenever that is!
Special thanks to Maggie Smith (Mike's wife), Beryl Westmacott (David's wife) and to Glenys (my wife) for all the hard background work they put in for us on the day.  Well done girls!
Keep sending in your photos, reminiscences and comments on the reunion to Jean.   She is looking forward to hearing from you all.
Best Wishes
Peter Westmacott (the boy from no.10)
P.S.   This is not the "official history" of the reunion that Mike Smith has directed me to produce.   That will come soon when I have had time to recover!

WHO LIVED WHERE ?

SUMMERVALE MAP.

Hello Jean
I had a large plan of Summervale on display with numbers below and spaces for people to write in who they thought lived where.  Here is the outcome of their efforts, which should add to our existing knowledge.
1.  Plumridge
2.  Kearney/Chapple
3.  Beard
4.  Wakeham
5.  Newlyn
6.  Hooke/Swift
7.  Cornforth
8.  Rutherford (never heard of them, have you?) NOPE!
9.  Rogers
10.Driver/Westmacott
11.Jolly
12.Richards
13.Smith
14.Self/Chick
15.Drayton
16.Humphries
17.Trueman/Everson
18.Abbot/Chown
19.Simpson/Trudgeon
20.Mason
21.Williams
22.Wren
23.Ralph
24.Stokes/Lord
25.Hodgson
26.Durham
27.Boyce
28.Symons
29.Chambers
30.Hewitt
31.Stock
32.Leoh
33.Dixon
34.Forbes
35.Whiting/Mothersele
36.Powell
37.Hargest
38.Brown
39.Duke
40.Chadwick (never heard of them, have you?) They lived next to us in Spencer Road. Don’t remember them in Summervale.

41.Laughton
42.Foulkes
43.Pease
44.Pell/Satchell/Castle
45.Hudson/Hurford P
46.Ward/Howlett
47.Vane
48.Chown/Smith/Pease
49.Lester
50.Deacon/Macey
I can't guarantee that this totally accurate.  There seems to be some uncertainty about those in the 40s, e.g. Pease.  Did they really live in both 43 and 48?      Peter W.

I thought the Pease’s lived right up the top near Maceys. Carol Richards used to babysit.

Chowns – more likely to be 18 rather than 48.

Number 17 – does no one remember the Humphreys? I do. Peter had very blond hair almost white and gave me a golden heart ! Still have it somewhere.

Old Friends - 1950

That is Peter middle row right hand side.

From Peter -

Hello Jean
I had several Summervale photos on display at the reunion and we were able to fill in quite a few of the missing names.
The photo with the ladies standing outside The Crown waiting for a coach to take them shopping/cinema:

ladies at crown
In the back row, to the right of Iris Hewitt, is Margaret Palmer, then Audrey White is next to her.  In the front row, to the right of Joyce Stock, is Shirley White (Audrey's sister).
It seems that none of these is a Summervalian.
The photo of the boys from 1950 with the woman in the back row:

Summervale boys 1950
It seems that this was a mixture of Summervale boys and others.  It was a cubs' outing.  The boys are as follows:
Front row (L to R):    Clive Williams,  David Knott, Tommy Smith with dogs (he lived in no.48), Robert Male (he was a friend of my brother David), Cliff Hargest, Kenny Isaacs, Allen Dixon.
Back row: (L to R):   Max Swain, Stephen Swift, David Turner, Ray Cozens, Michael Hopkins, John Scrivens (dad had electrical shop in West Street).
Nobody knew who the woman was.  Surprisingly, I knew 10 of the 13 boys. I didn't know Tommy Smith, David Turner or Ray Cozens.  Most of the others I recall playing with, either in the Rec or in Summervale.

The photo of the group of Summervale children on The Green in about 1950.

Old Friends - 1950_thumb[1]We were able to name them all apart from one:
Front row (L to R):   Clifford Hargest, Philip Richards, Christine Jolly, Gloria Dixon, Mike Jolly and ??????????
Centre row (L to R):  Valerie Jolly, Pat Laughton, Mary Ralph, Peter Humphries.
back row (L to R):    Derek Drayton, Tommy Smith (lived no.48), Allen Dixon.
More to follow later.

More Reunion Photos

First of all I must apologise for losing the photos in an earlier post.

I put them on Photobucket but stupidly moved them to a different folder so the link was broken.

So, lets have another go -

Doris Powell, Mike Smith and Doris' daughter Doreen.

f6a69aa4.jpg

Irene Forbes. Marjorie Richards and Margaret Mason

Beryl Kearney, Norma Simpson, Gloria Dixon and Mary Ralph.

Derek Drayton and his Mum Edith

The Gang - Allen Dixon, Peter Westmacott, Mike Smith, Bill Noy (teacher at both Ditton Street Sec.Mod. and Boys' Grammar School in 1950s), Mike Jolly, David Westmacott,  Big Bobby Chambers and Clive Williams, looking very much like his dad Bill.

David Westmacott and Malcolm Driver.

Fingers crossed I hope this is now OK!
